The police have in custody 80 people after deadly post-election clashes in Bundibugyo. Police spokesperson Fred Enanga also says so far 9 people have also been confirmed dead.
According to Enanga, police together with the sister security agencies are screening the 80 suspects to understand the real root cause of the clashes.
The police mouth piece however says trouble started prior to the LCV Chairpersons elections where there was a group under the command of Obudingihya bwa bamba, “The king of the Bamba, Lt. Kamya Martin,” who were planning to conduct attacks around the 22nd before local council elections.
Addressing the media in Kampala this morning, Enanga said: “This is because Mr. Mutegeki Ronald was not supported by the Obudinghya. The Obudinghya was interested in the candidature of Tibamanya Jolly. All these were NRM candidates.”
He added that “Despite the fact that cultural institutions were prohibited from participating in politics, the obudingihya, or king of Bamba, was highly involved in politicking and electioneering in Bundibugyo.”
The king is said to have blamed his subjects for allowing the Bakonzo community to infiltrate them and make NRM’s Josephine Byaboona win the district member of parliament seat instead of his favorite Ntabazi Harriet.
It is also alleged that the king told his subjects that if in any case Tibamanya failed to win the LCV election, violence must immediately begin against the supporters of her rival, Mutegeki.
“You could see that the king was driving his subjects against other ethnic groups within the same kingdom.”
“The king appointed coordinators; we have information of “Mukiibi Simon, Mulyoya Peter, and Biriwadi Amunoni. He instructed them to burn houses during the night, Kill people while in their gardens, and administering poison at social gatherings.” Enanga explained
