Police have blocked a group of defiant people in the name of Christians from a team from All Saints Church, Rukungiri district who were on their way to visit Dr. Kizza Besigye, the former Forum for Democratic Change-FDC presidential candidate at his home in Kasangati, Wakiso district.
The 76 people, who left Rukungiri at around midnight, were intercepted this morning at Lutete along Gayaza road, a few meters from Kasangati where they had planned to hold prayers with Besigye at his home.
According to reports, this same group had earlier on been intercepted by Police at Kahungu in Ntungamo District but was left to go, shortly after, while one of the travelers, who had carried two goats for Besigye was retained by Police.
The Deputy Police spokesperson, Polly Namaye, denies claims that they have blocked the group from visiting Besigye, saying "the Regional Police Commander (RPC) and the Divisional Police Commander (DPC) are there right now, trying to agree with the group on how best they can see Besigye but in smaller groups.”
She added that, “We are also trying to verify who these people are." The group is led by Right Rev Bamushangire, Rt. Reverand Kanyonyi, Reverend Kahangirwe, and Charles Makulu, the Rukungiri Mayor.
Besigye has been under police siege for the last 30 days, while a few dignitaries have been allowed to see him.
