The Central Executive Committee, CEC the highest organ of the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM party has announced that primaries all be conducted to choose speaker and deputy speaker of parliament.
The pronouncement was mad by the NRM party Electoral Commission chairperson,Dr. Tanga Odoi, on Tuesday.
Odoi explains that the party E C will begin receiving letters of expression of interest for the posts from aspiring candidates from April 26th-29th, thereafter, the Commission will compile a list and submit the names to CEC for vetting and approval before the NRM parliamentary caucus votes for the candidates on May 5th.
Dr. Tanga Odoi adds that “the names of the winners will be submitted to the whole house for consideration and those aspiring for election as speaker and deputy speaker should exercise discipline, as they risk being disqualified from the race by the party Electoral Commission.”
A fee of Shillings five million and two million Shillings will be paid as expression of interest by those vying for election as speaker and deputy speaker respectively.
Jacob Oulanya, who is fighting to unseat the current speaker Rebecca Kadaga, confirms that he is ready to pay the required fees.
To date, members of parliament have been divided into two groups with majority of the women legislators supporting Kadaga’s candidature, while a few others are in support of her junior Oulanya.
Most members have used the family crisis at Oulanya’s home against him, claiming that if he could not keep his family together, how would he bring together MPs with different ideologies?
Recently, his wife filed for a divorce, claiming he abused her on several occasions.
