Former Forum for democratic change party presidential candidate, Col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s lawyers have set off from Kampala to go and meet their client who is still being held at Moroto police station.
Besigye was on Friday remanded until May 25th 2016, but reports indicate that he could return to court today, to answer treason charges.
He defied a court order issued by deputy chief Justice, Stephen Kavuma banning any party activities. But despite the interim court order, Besigye beat security at his Kasangati home and found his way to down town, just a day to President Museveni’s swearing in.
He would then be arrested and then airlifted to moroto, where he has since been kept. Prosecution led by Moroto Resident State Attorney Gerald Amalo alleges that “Besigye, while in Kampala on May 11, declared himself and took an oath as President of the Republic of Uganda contrary to the outcome of the February 18, presidential election.”
According to the FDC party spokesperson, Ssemujju Nganda, Besigye’s lawyers are on their way to moroto, while other party officials, who are locked up in a meeting now at Najjanankumbi will leave later today, or tomorrow morning.
Meanwhile, Police mouthpiece, Fred Enanga says they have summoned a couple of top FDC officials for allegedly aiding and witnessing the former FDC presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye take an oath at his home in kasangati as the president elect of Uganda in the just concluded Feb 18th presidential elections.
Addressing the press at Naguru this morning, Enanga said that the FDC chairperson Wasswa Birigwa together with wafula ogutu and Geoffrey Ekanya were summoned and are expected to appear today at special investigation unit in kireka to give a statement following their appearances in a video that aired out on the 11th of May 2016 on different media platforms showing Dr kizza Besigye take an oath as president.
Enanga said that while Ekanya and Ogutu requested to appear to the investigation unit tomorrow 17th may, because they expect their lawyer to be back from moroto tomorrow, but Amb. Waswa Birigwa has not done any communication and thus expected today.
Enanga also says Besigye faces charges of treason under article 103 section 7 of the presidential act and the trial might face misprision of treason under section 25 of the penal code.
