The opposition Democratic Party, DP has suggested a political dialogue as the best way to end the dilemma in which the country lives today.
Speaking to the media in Kampala today morning, Mohammed Kezaala, the DP national chairman said if the current situation escalates, it will be as bad to those in government as it will be to those outside.
He was reacting to the arrest, banishment, and the eventual treason charges slapped against former FDC presidential candidate Col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye, as well as prior manifestation of the new levels of intolerance and political pride on Uganda’s political landscape.
“We call upon all and sundry that political dialogue is the best tool to address the current situation, whose escalation will be as bad to those in government as it will be to those outside government,” Kezaala said.
He added; We wish to state that the time is not about pointing fingers to show might or weakness, who is right or wrong, but a time to heal a divided country now, where we have the haves and the have not, the oppressor and the oppressed! A country where our young people have lost hope in civil mechanisms but those in government continue to say everything is fine, even when almost everything seems to have broken down.”
“We believe that if the current state of affairs continues, then the torturous political story of Uganda will be re-lived. It is yet another sad episode, which we think can be reversed if we even believe that it is dire.”
Besigye was on Monday airlifted from Moroto where he was held since last week, and is now being held at Luzira maximum prison, here in Kampala.
His troubles stem from an appearance he made in down town Kampala, a day before president Museveni’s swearing in ceremony. A video also appeared on social media that showed Besigye being sworn in at an unknown venue, in company of some top FDC officials, who have now been summoned by police to explain their role in the matter.
Besigye faces treason charges.
