The forum for Democratic Party President Gen. Mugisha Muntu is today expected to announce the leader of opposition for the 10th parliament.
The race is to replace Wafula Oguttu is tight with some FDC big shots including spokesperson Semujju Nganda, the former Leader of Opposition Prof Ogenga Latigo, MPs Kaaps Fungaroo, Elijah Okupa, Odonga Otto and the only female Winnie Kiiza.
The committee led by Gen. Muntu will sit to choose the best candidate for the role. Other members of the committee are; FDC party chairman Amb. Waswa Biriggwa, Ingrid Turinawe, the chief party mobilize, and party secretary general, Nathan Nandala Mafabi.
The Leader of the Opposition is chosen by a vote of the largest non-government party, in this case, FDC. The LOP can keep their job as long as they are a member of parliament and retain the support of the opposition.
The Leader of the Opposition is tasked with, chairing meetings in which the opposition discusses policies and examines bills (proposed laws), presenting alternative policies to those of the government, selecting members of the opposition to be shadow ministers, leading the Shadow Cabinet, acting as the chief opposition spokesperson, and leading the opposition in a national election.
