President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will today join other African heads of state in Zambia for the inauguration of President Edgar Lungu.

Lungu won a controversial election that saw his rival Hakainde Hichilema drag him to Court contesting the election as a fraud.

Mr Lungu secured 50.35%, just over the 50% threshold needed to avoid a second round under a new electoral system.

His main rival, Hichilema, who alleged electoral fraud, won 47.67%.

On Monday, the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) failed in its efforts to block today's presidential inauguration.

Complaining of irregularities, Mr Hichilema went to the Constitutional Court to get the result annulled. But this was thrown out on a technicality with the judges ruling that the UPND had missed the 14-day deadline for cases to be heard.

On Monday, the party went to the Supreme Court and Judge Nigel Mutuna ruled that decisions made by the Constitutional Court cannot be reversed by the Supreme Court.

Other heads of state expected to attend Lungu’s swearing in ceremony include; Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe) among others.

Lungu, 59, became Zambian president in January 2015 following Michael Sata's death.
