Seven months since opposition Ironman Dr. Kiiza Besigye was charged with treason, the case is yet to be transferred for hearing to the High Court.
A frustrated Besigye told the press at High Court today morning where he had gone to report as part of his bail conditions.
Treason is a capital offence which can only be heard by the High Court, but the file is still under Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s court.
“I was charged with a capital offence, a serious offence which is not tried in the magistrates court, it can only be tried by the High Court. But after seven months, that case is not yet here, which is to my mind a gross violation of my rights, because every citizen is entitled to a speedy and fair trial if charged with any offence” Besigye noted.
Besigye says the treason charge has turned into a rumor since it cannot be proven. He says there is a serious gap within the law that there is not time limitation in which a person can have a case tried.
He adds that the intention of the constitution is that there should be a speedy and fair trial and law makers should adjust the law and put a limit onto how long one can keep on waiting to be tried before the case is presented to court.
