The opposition Democratic Party, DP is demanding for the immediate resignation of the party Vice president and EALA representative Hon. Fred Mukasa Mbidde with immediate effect for eating on the same table with President Yoweri Museveni.
Appearing on NBS TV this morning, Kenneth Paul Kakande the party spokesperson said it was only honorable for Mbidde to resign and not take the party down with him.
Mbidde’s troubles began when he showed up at the 31st NRM anniversary celebrations in Masindi on Thursday, and was invited by the president to the podium where Museveni threw all kinds of praises to the DP deputy vice president.
Now, Kakande says if Mbidde has decided to eat with the enemy, he should leave their party for good.
"I'm waiting for other resignations, including party vice president (Mbidde), after he appeared on the same podium w/ M7" he said
The development comes at a time when former Jinja Municipality Mayor Mohammed Baswari Kezaala has thrown in towel to his position as the Democratic Party-DP National Chairperson following his appointment as a deputy ambassador.
He told journalists last night that he had written to the DP Secretary General notifying him of his resignation and is currently awaiting the vetting process to take up his new post.
The appointment of Kezaala over the weekend as deputy ambassador to a yet to be name country among others drew angry reactions from DP and other opposition party members.
However, Kakande says the party hasn't received the hard copy of Kezaala resignation but they have seen it online.
“"We didn't expect him to resign. On Thursday before the appointment, he was briefing people about values of our party, DP" "I talked to Kezaala after I heard about his appointment and told him to address a presser that he wasn't consulted" Kakande said.
He added that Kezaala’s decision to take on the Museveni job is betrayal to the party. "I feel he has betrayed the values of the Democratic Party. He has betrayed me as well and I'm scared" "Kezaala believed in the struggle. He believed in compassion, justice and equal opportunities."
He however says that among all those who have left, Kezaala has done the most honorable thing, to resign.
