Candidates vying for the East African Legislative Assembly, EALA seats are this morning campaigning on the floor of Parliament to woe MPs into voting them in this afternoon’s election.

The campaigns started at 10:00am, and every candidate has 7 minutes to convince the house that they will do better in representing Uganda at the regional assembly.

Voting will later take place at 2PM in a tent outside parliament. Each Member of Parliament, according to the guidelines set by office of the clerk to parliament Jane Kibirige, will choose 9 suitable candidates, short of that, the vote will be rendered invalid.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party claims it hopes the party member Hon. Fred Mukasa Mbidde gets the majority vote to return to the regional house. Mbidde whose name comes first on the ballot paper told reporters on Monday that he expects to be voted on an advantage of competence.

47 candidates were approved for the 9 seats by the parliament’s verification committee, and all their names appear on a single ballot papers which bears no passport pictures.

They include; 6 NRM members, 2 FDC, 1 DP, 1 UPC and 37 independents. Each opposition has one candidate, though FDC forwarded 2, while independents are entitled to one representative too.

Names have been arranged in alphabetical order following candidates objections raised yesterday on the floor of parliament.

So far Cissy Bayiga, Basiime Richard, Lauben Bwengye, former internal affairs minister Rose Akol, Agaba Martin, have finished campaigning
