The electoral commission has extended campaigns for the Aruu North parliamentary by-election by one day giving candidates additional time to traverse the constituency.
The extension, as President Yoweri Museveni visits the constituency later today to campaign for the National Resistance Movement-NRM party candidate James Nabinson Kidega.
He will attend rallies at Pajule Primary School and Atanga Primary School. The rallies had initially been planned to end yesterday, Monday.
Joseph Omona, the Pader District Returning Officer says that the extra day was added upon request by the candidates in the race to compensate for the disruption of campaigns, caused by a meeting held on March 16 between the commission and contenders. The meeting was convened by the Electoral Commission to address emerging challenges in the field.
The Aruu North Parliamentary seat fell vacant after the Court of Appeal upheld a High Court ruling nullifying the election of Lucy Achiro Otim as the area legislator. The ruling was based on a petition filed by National Resistance Movement (NRM) party candidate James Nabinson Kidega citing indulgence in electoral malpractice in the February 2016 parliamentary election.
Elections will be held on Thursday April 6.
