The National Unity Platform (NUP) has commended Lawrence Alionzi upon being successfully elected as Guild President for Makerere University.

The University took to virtual polls on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, for the 88th Makerere University guild president. Over 27,000 Makerere students participated in the exercise.

Alionzi is an Electrical Engineering student at the university, hailing from Arua.

Alionzi beat eight other contestants to be declared the winner. He polled 5,839 against his closest rivals, Ibra Hussein who got 2,079 votes, and Justus Tukamushaba (1,758 votes).

Following his victory, NUP principal Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine and other leaders within the party praised Alionzi for his massive win. 

In a tweet, he wrote:

“Our own comrade Alionzi Lawrence aka Dangote, all the way from Arua (West-Nile) was decisively elected 88th Guild President of Makerere University. Thank you Gallant Makerereans for rejecting the regime’s blackmail and trusting this brother. Congratulations✊🏾 May you serve well.” 

Leader of Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga followed suit in a tweet saying

In his remarks after winning, Alinzo appreciated Makerere's students for putting their trust in him.

“A single orphan to a peasant mother is now the 88th Guild President of the region’s most prestigious university; what better definition for ‘A Hill of Endless Possibilities’? Alionzi said
