Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs has explained the reason behind his leery stare at Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal.
Reds legend Giggs has been scrutinised since footage emerged of his reaction to Ashley Young's dramatic 89th minute winner at Newcastle.
The United icon, who has been tipped by some to succeed Van Gaal as United chief when the Dutchman leaves, looked suitably unimpressed despite Young securing a hard-fought three points for the Reds in the dying moments on Tyneside.
Despite Van Gaal turning to Giggs in delight following the goal, the Welshman appeared to give LVG an emotionless, steely glare.
Giggs has since had his say on the matter, and, speaking to WalesOnline, he claims the whole incident has been blown out of proportion.
He said: "I celebrated but then, just like I was as a player, I suddenly realised 'yeah, don't get too excited, there's four or five minutes to go.'
"And that was it really. The media like to try and twist things but I'm used to it."
Van Gaal reacted with a mix of sarcasm and anger when the question of a purported rift between himself and Giggs was suggested to him.
“No, we have a very bad relationship. We have a very bad relationship,” said Van Gaal, his voice tinged with heavy sarcasm.
“I’m very irritated because of this question. Everybody can see we have a very good relationship and how we work very well together.
“Not only Ryan Giggs, but all the staff and the players. It’s a way of suggesting things, then I am very irritated, and I take my message against the media.
"I’m not pleased. You are saying that. You are suggesting that, not I, because of the question about the relationship with Ryan Giggs, the suggestion.”
