Terrified morgue workers had the shock of their lives after a man who was pronounced dead in hospital woke up the next day.
Paul Mutora tried to kill himself by drinking insecticide and was pronounced dead by staff at Naivasha hospital, Kenya, on Wednesday night.
The next day, morgue employees ran away from his body which began to stir and was seen breathing.
The hospital’s chief medic, Dr Joseph Mburu, said the drug used to treat him slowed his heartbeat down, which may have led to the mistake.
‘This might have confused medical personnel, but the victim was saved before he could be embalmed,’ he told Kenya’s Standard newspaper.
The paper reported that Mr Mutora’s father and other relatives visited the morgue on Thursday morning to view the body and returned home to make funeral arrangements.
‘But in the afternoon we were informed he was alive and were left in shock,’ the father said.

Mr Mutora, who is now recovering in the hospital north-west of capital, Nairobi, said: ‘This was a mistake from the start and I apologise to my father.’
A witness told the Star newspaper the mortuary workers heard noises coming from the cold room ‘took to their heels screaming’.
