The chairman of Makindye based Military Court Martial Maj. Gen. Levi Karuhanga passed on last evening in Kampala.
Army Spokesperson Paddy Ankunda says Maj. Karuhanga collapsed at home, and was rushed to Nakasero hospital where he died.
“Gen Levi Karuhanga reached his home and even had a meal, then collapsed. He never died on the plane,” says Ankunda.
At the time of his death, he was the serving chairman of the military Court Martial, and was in the middle of renegade Gen. David Sejusa’s trial.
Maj. Karuhanga was recently flown to India for treatment, and had just returned home.
Who is Maj. Gen. Levi Karuhanga?
Born in Bushenyi district in the Western Region of Uganda on February 24, 1956, Karuhanga attended Nyamitoma, Bweranyangi, and Mwengura primary schools.
He would later join Mbarara High School for his secondary school studies, before moving to Nairobi, where he graduated with a diploma in international studies.
Maj. Karuhanga joined the Ugandan Bush War struggle in 1981 in Luwero district under recruitment number RO/057, the 57th recruit of the then new rebel force, and fought throughout the war until the National Resistance Army captured power in 1986.
The late army officer has over the last 25 years undergone military trainings including courses Strategic Military Studies at the Egyptian Military Academy in Cairo, Military Course at the China War College, Military Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Nigeria, National Strategic Studies course from National Defence College, Kenya, from July 2006 until June 2007.
During his life in military Karuhanga has served in a number of assignments in the UPDF, including as Brigade commander in the UPDF 4th Division, between 1990 and 1992, first commander of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) in 2007, he was a member of the UPDF Contingent and second in command of the United Nations forces in Liberia, in 1994, he served as Deputy Commander of the 3rd UPDF Division, in 1998, he was also a 3rd Division commanding officer in 2001, and 1st Division commanding officer from 2005 until 2007.
In 2010, Karuhanga was appointed commanding officer of the UPDF Reserve Force, until June 2014 when he was appointed the chairman of the General Court Martial, a position he has held until death.
Under his Chairmanship at the General Court Martial, Maj. Karuhanga has handled cases including that of Brig. Michael Ondonga who faced charges of offences related to operations; interfering with process of law; and disobeying lawful orders.
At the time of his death, he was hearing case of Gen. David Sejusa on charges of insubordination.
