Looks like Drake may have found himself embroiled in more than one hip-hop feud at the moment. While Drizzy has spent much of the last week feuding with Meek Mill, the release of Dr. Dre’s new album Compton brought new fighting words at the hand of Kendrick Lamar.
The two MCs have been beefing of and on for the better part of two years now. Drake was among the many rappers called out by Kendrick on his infamous “Control” verse in 2013. Drake responded with the Nothing Was the Same track “The Language”, but made nice several months during the 2014 installment of OVO Fest calling Kendrick a “king.”
However, Kendrick took another shot at Drake on the Jay Rock track “Pay For It”. “Been dissecting your motormouth until I break down the engine,” he raps, “See my opponent then, cease your existence/ Endin’ our friendship, baby, I’d rather die alone.”
With the release of Dr. Dre’s Compton comes several new bars from Kendrick, and at least a few of them seem to be about Drake.
“But still I got enemies giving me energy I wanna fight now/ Subliminally sent to me all of this hate/ I thought I was holding the mic down,” raps Kendrick on “Darkside/Gone”. The “energy” lyric appears to be a reference to Drake’s track of the same name.
The diss on “Deep Water” is much more blatant, as Kendrick references Drake’s track “Started From the Bottom” as well as his “Six God” nickname. “Motherfucker know I started from the bottom,” later rapping, “They liable to bury him, they nominated six to carry him/ They worrying him to death, but he’s no vegetarian/ The beef is on his breath, inheriting the drama better than/ A great white, nigga, this is life in my aquarium.”
Drake successfully dismantled Meek Mill’s attacks in less than a week, but going up against Kendrick is a much taller task. It should be a fascinating summer.
