Trouble has befallen a police officer in Nwoya district after he fired at worshipers. Identified as Corporal Moses Mureeba, the officer is wanted for opening fire at worshipers in Alingiri Community Church in Alingiri Village in Lungulu Sub County on Tuesday evening.

Witnesses allege that Mureeba, who had been deployed to guard the private farm of Amelio Poggy, stormed Alingiri community Church dressed in a military uniform demanding to lead the sermon while drunk and was turned down.

Denis Atube, the Lungulu Sub county chairperson, says after being turned down, Mureeba left the church and returned shortly with his gun. He reportedly opened fire on the worshipers forcing them to flee for dear life.

According to Atube, the officer was disarmed by a church member and handed over to security for appropriate action. None of the worshippers was injured in the attack. Only three bullets were recovered from Mureeba's gun.

He is being held at Anaka town council police post for further investigation. Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson, says Corporal Mureeba is being investigated for arson and appearing in public while armed for unclear reasons.

According to Okema, they will forward the officers file to the Resident State Attorney for sanctioning once investigations are completed. Alingiri Village in Lungulu Sub County is a hotbed of land disputes. Many of the conflicts pit senior government officials and wealthy residents against poverty stricken residents.

The former prefer to use soldiers and Police to secure their tenure while the latter relies on mob justice to defend their land.
