The Busia Resident District Commissioner’s office has launched an investigation into a missing police officer attached to Busia Central police station for allegedly stealing a Bajaj motorcycle registration number UFC 373 X belonging to a Boda boda rider.
It is alleged that the officer only identified as Obong approached one Sadhati Gonga at their boda boda stage near the Sofia police station on February 13, 2021, and asked him to ride him to the station.
Gonga told police that while at Sofia police station, Obong talked to some officer at the counter and returned shortly after. He asked Gonga to give him the motorcycle, saying they were going to pick up a suspected counterfeit currency dealer from Mawero village.
The officer from the police counter he only identifies as Okiror from the Field Force Unit-FFU picked the motorcycle keys from him and handed them to Obong and a special police constable he only identified, Vincent.
The duo left but only Vincent returned to the police station, saying Obong had dumped him on the way and vanished with the motorcycle. Gonga says that he has since tried to file a case at Busia central police station but the officers keep tossing him up and down.
Emmanuel Kibumbuyi, a Boda-boda rider at the stage has confirmed seeing Obong picking their colleague from the stage. He, however, says that they were surprised to see Gonga returning to the stage in tears without his motorbike.
John Achira, the Busia Resident District Commissioner, says that Obong was attached to Busia Central Police Station where he was given sick leave in January this year. He says that as head of security in the district, he has launched serious investigations into the matter.
Moses Kakiryo, the Busia District Police commander-DPC declined to comment on the matter.
