An Indian national is fighting for his life in hospital after a police officer shot him several times in the chest.
Patel Kunjaj, 24, owns a local Hardware shop in Kisoro municipality. He was attacked by the police constable identified as Eliod Gumizamu, attached to the Field Force Unit (FFU), and deployed at the Nyakabande Refugee Transit Centre.
The incident happened on Thursday afternoon when Gumizamu in the company of civilians approached Kunjaj’s shop and shot at him under unclear circumstances.
The Police Spokesperson for Kigezi region Elly Maate says Kunjaj was later rushed to St. Francis hospital in Mutolere where he is currently admitted with excessive bleeding.
He says preliminary findings indicate that after the shooting Gumizamu put the gun in a sack and attempted to run away on a motorcycle but was blocked by Kunjaj’s workers and arrested. His accomplices however managed to escape.
Maate says that Gumizamu is in police custody at Kisoro Police Station while a hunt is on for the other suspects. He says police recovered the gun which was used in the crime.
"As I talk, he is admitted at Mutolere hospital, the police officer escaped from his deployment together with civilians whose identities are not known and shot him. Inquiries are still ongoing to establish what caused the incident." — Says Maate
It is alleged that Gumizamu was hired by a businessman he only identified as Commando 8 to commit the act at a cost of 20 million Shillings.
