Makere University has further extended opening date for the first semester of the 2016/17 academic year from tomorrow 13th August until further notice.
The development follows a continued strike of the non-teaching staff of all public universities who are demanding their salary arrears.
The dates had initially been moved from Saturday August 6th to tomorrow, with hopes that the strike would be called off during this week, but this did not happen.
Minister of education Janet Museveni told parliament early this week that the staff had agreed to call off the strike yesterday Thursday August 11th but in vain.
In a meeting held at Makerere University yesterday, the staff under their umbrella body, Public Universities non-teaching staff executive Forum (PUNTISEF) said they want their arrears paid if they are to return to work.
PUNTISEF chairman, Jackson Betihamah says negotiations have not brought the changes they need. In a letter dated August 11th, the Vice Chancellor Prof. John Ddumba explains that the University management has postponed opening dates until further notice, something that could spark an uprising in students.
