Days after taking on the mantle of acting Gulu District Police Commander, ASP Joseph Ayiki has been sacked from the commanding docket.

Ayiki was fired a day after being shot and injured by a private security guard under unclear circumstances.

The embattled police commander sustained gunshot wounds during a scuffle at TAKS Center; a Gulu based daytime recreation centre on Tuesday night and remains hospitalized at St. Mary's Hospital Lacor where he underwent a minor surgery.

But yesterday, Ayiki’s gunshot wounds were not as painful as a decision taken by the Police Professional Standard Unit (PSU), who convened an emergency meeting chaired by Detective Superintendent of Police Osteen Wilber Wanyama the acting as Regional Police Commander for Aswa River Region, to review circumstances that led to the 3 a.m. incident.

The meeting according to a source, who attended, took place at Professional Standard Unit branch at Aswa River Region police headquarters in Gulu district. The source said the meeting said Detective Superintendent of Police Osteen Wilber Wanyama announced the news of his sacking to police management in the region.

The meeting decided that ASP John Bosco Nyangkol; the OC in charge of operations at Gulu Central Police Station assumes the office of the DPC with immediate effect while AIP Peter Susu was assigned the office of OC Operations. Inspector of Police Moses Ogwang replaces ASP Nyangkol as acting OC Station.

ASP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa River Police Spokesperson confirmed the changes to URN saying it aims at filling gap created by ASP Ayiki's sickness.

Police Spokesperson Emilian Kayima added that the move is to prevent gaps in the command chain and management of Police in Gulu district.

Circumstances surrounding the shooting of ASP Joseph Ayiki remain a subject of investigation and public discussion in Gulu district. David Olanya, the EXPOSS security guard who discharged the lone bullet at the commanding officer remains under police custody at Gulu Central Police station.

Ayiki has been the acting District Police Commander in October since Martin Okoyo, the then DPC went on study leave.
