A tragedy has occurred on Lake Victoria after a boat capsized killing five people this morning.
According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, the boat had ten people on board but five of them survived the tragedy.
He explains that those who survived had life jackets and were able to swim to the police marine boat which had come to rescue them after being informed about the tragedy.
The boat which was heading to Gabba market capsized at Buzindere at 04:00am. Three dead bodies had been retrieved by press time, while the police marine searched for two others.
“Cause of accident; It could be bad weather because the lake was rough, but we cannot also rule out, the boat was sea worthy. Because even if it was bad weather, police marine recovered it when it had split into two,” says Onyango.
Onyago was addressing the media at his CPS office in kampala. He explained that the affected people were going for market day at Ggaba. He says they were transporting merchandize from Penja to Ggaba market.
Their merchandize included Sweet potatoes, cassava, Matooke, fish.
