The Commanding Officer of the 3rd Mountain Battalion under 2nd Division in Western Uganda, Lt. Col Richard Muhangi is dead.

Muhangi died last night at Bombo Military Hospital where he had been admitted for a month as a result of injuries he sustained in the June 23 shooting in Ntoroko district in which two civilians died.

He and other senior security officers have been under investigation in connection to the shooting.

Major Peter Mugisa, the Second Division UPDF Spokesperson attributed the death of Muhangi to over bleeding. According to Mugisa, the Lt. Col. Muhangi sustained injures on the thigh and hands forcing doctors to amputate his leg.

Following the shooting, Muhangi who hails from Mbarara District was arrested together with the Ntoroko District Police Commander Gerald Atuhairwe and the District Internal Security Officer Brian Babishanga on allegations of killing Erasmus Irumba, a resident of Nyakasenyi village and Richard Siet Kanyoro, a resident of Budiba in Ntoroko district.

It's alleged that the suspects shot Irumba and Kanyoro at close range using AK47 rifles on allegations that they were selling guns.

Atuhairwe, Babishanga and three police officers Abdul Kyarimpa, Ivan Bakasaba and Irema Saulo Balimpa are currently on remand at Katojo Prison on charges of murder and three counts of aggravated robbery.
