Prosecutors, under their umbrella body “Uganda Association of Prosecutors” UAP, have this morning laid down their tools protesting failure by government to respect the 90 days ultimatum.
Courts in Kampala were this morning empty, with Baxter Bakibinga, the chairperson UAP explaining that the 90 days elapsed and they have never heard from government despite numerous reminders.
He said 14 days before the elapse of the ultimatum; they sent a reminder to a committee of cabinet handling the matter and Hon Otafiire but have not received any response.
In July 2017, the prosecutors had a sit-down strike and government through Hon Kahinda Otafiire the minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs asked them to return to work as they looked into their issues. Prosecutors then welcomed the government promises in an extraordinary meeting held on 17th July 2017 at Imperial Royale hotel, and resolved to give government 90 days to address the concerns.
Now, Mr. Bakibinga adds that being that they are united, he expects none of his colleagues to step in court today and adds that in order to end this strike government must fulfill most of the issues they brought before it.
He further added that in order to suspend this strike they will first summon the General Assembly meeting where members will vote on the way forward.
