Archbishop Emeritus Nkoyoyo Sendoff ongoing at Namugongo

Thousands of people have showed up for the sendoff of retired Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Dr. Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo funeral service for, which is ongoing at the Anglican Martyrs Shrine in Namugongo.

Thousands of people have showed up for the sendoff of retired Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Dr. Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo funeral service for, which is ongoing at the Anglican Martyrs Shrine in Namugongo.
 
A funeral service which started earlier this morning is still under way led by the Archbishop Stanley Ntagali. This comes after three requiem services that were held at All Saints Cathedral, St. Paul's Cathedral Namirembe and St. Andrew and Phillip's Cathedral Mukono respectively, over the last two days in honor of the fallen man of God.
 
A number of religious leaders from all denominations led by Kampala Archbishop Kizito Lwanga, political leaders and Buganda Kingdom officials among others are all in attendance.  
 
80 year old Nkoyoyo Breathed his last on Friday from pneumonia at Kampala Hospital on Friday where he had been undergoing treatment. In December 2016, Archbishop Nkoyoyo was rushed to the United Kingdom where he underwent treatment for cancer in early 2017.
Dr. Nkoyoyo will be buried today at Namugongo Anglican Martyrs Shrine near the museum which he has been working hard to complete. It is at this same venue, that Nkoyoyo was ordained a reverend on June 3, 1969,  starting a five-decade journey of priesthood. More than 48 years later, he will be laid to rest here.
 
Dr Nkoyoyo served as Archbishop of the Church of Uganda from 1995 to 2004. During his leadership, he pioneered many visionary initiatives, including upgrading the Bishop Tucker Theological College in Mukono into Uganda Christian University, the first university in Uganda to be privately chartered.
 
The university has since grown from the original 120 students to more than 12,000 students.
 
He leaves a legacy of several orphanages and primary schools, including ones that care for the blind and other physical disabilities started early in his ministry together with his wife, Ruth.
