Arinda Adrine, a P.7 Candidate at Universal Primary School in Kabale is dead, after a fire gutted a dormitory she was sleeping in last evening.
Arinda had been sick. This unforging fire broke out at 07:30pm on Monday evening destroying the girl's dormitory, the administration block and property worth millions of Shillings including pupil's property, furniture, beddings, office documents and computers.
According to two teachers who were on night duty, the fire outbreak was caused by a short circuit, adding that they saw sparks on the wires in the corner of the burnt dormitory before it started spreading to the pupil's beddings.
Fortunately, most of the pupils ran for dear life as they were preparing to go for night preps when the fire started. But, unfortunately, Arinda who was lying in bed ill, couldn't run to safety.
Police fire team was called and rushed to the school to contain the fire from spreading to other buildings but midway, they ran out of water, promptint the fire tender to rush to National Water and Sewerage Corporation to fetch more water as the fire spread.
The Principal Education Officer Kabale Municipality, Mr.John Byabagambi, describes the incident as unfortunate and blames the school administration for installing burglar proof windows in the dormitories, which hampered rescue efforts.
The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Ely Maate told Howwe.Biz that Arinda was rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital where she succumbed to burns minutes later.
According to Maate, they have commenced investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak.
