The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces, UPDF has confirmed that former Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura is in their custody.
In a letter authored by the Army spokesperson Brig. Richard Karemire, it is not clear why the former IGP has been taken into custody.
The letter also confirms that the General, who is stilla serving military officer was summoned by the Chief of defence forces Gen. David Muhoozi to appear at the General Head quarters in Mbuya on Tuesday, but he (Kayihura) travelled to Mbarara.
“A helicopter was subsquently dispatched to transport him from his home in Kashagama – Lyantonde District, but on arrival, Gen. Kale had travelled to Mbarara and so it had to return to Kampala” part of the letter reads.
Adding that; “The helicopter was today sent back to Kashagama and has returned safely to Kampala with him on board” the letter concludes.
Last evening, several news outlets reported that Gen. Kayihura had been arrested in Lyantonde, but this would be dismissed by authorities as a rumor.
For now, the country waits to see if he will be arraigned and charged before the military court martial, and what charges will be brought against him.
His dismissal from police was a relief to many, especially opposition members who had been severaly arrested and tortured under his leadership, his arrest, according to social media now, is equally a sigh of relief to many who thought, he had walked free.
