A yet to be identified Uganda police officer attached to the Field Force Unit at Hima Police Station is in trouble for shooting dead an officer of Uganda People's Defense Forces-UPDF.
The army identifies the deceased as Lance Corporal Johnson Bright, a soldier attached to the 11th UPDF Battalion.
According to Captain Stephen Tumwesigye, the spokesperson 11th UPDF battalion, Bright met his death on Sunday evening at Maliba Trading Centre in Maliba Sub county Kasese district.
Bright 35 had only returned to the country a few months back after serving under the African Union Mission in Somalia-AMISOM. Captain Tumwesigye, says investigations are ongoing.
“He was on first leave; unfortunately last night as he had gone for an evening probably with his colleague, he was shot dead by police in unclear circumstances. So we are investigating what could have been the cause of the shooting resulting into his death. Of course we are not happy about the death, it has affected us because we have lost manpower” Captain Tumwesigye revealed this morning.
Bright’s brother, Nicholas Baguma, told us that he was with the deceased when a team of police officers clad in the Field Force Unit uniforms surrounded them at a drinking joint.
“At 8:30pm, while at a bar, police officers came and asked us what time is this? Bright said it is still early, he offered to show them his government ID, but they refused, pushed him and a police officer put him on gunpoint, I was with Bright and a lady. I took a step before Bright was suddenly shot dead” the brother narrated. Residents of Kachindo Village in Maliba, say they reported the incident to police, which took responsibility.
Police has since promised to release a statement on the shooting.
