Uganda will tomorrow Saturday August 11 join the rest of the United Nations Fraternity to commemorate the International Youth Day.

According to Hon. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi, the Minister of state for Youth and Children Affairs, the celebration is in accordance with the UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/54/120 of the 54th UN Session.

The National celebrations will be held in Kampiringisa National Rehabilitation Centre in Mpigi district under the theme; “Safe Spaces for Youth.”

Minister Nakiwala told a press briefing this morning that the theme was chosen by the UN to enable countries to reflect on the available space for youth that must be safe for them to participate in social, economic, and cultural and political development.

The minister called for engagement of youths in meaningful activities related to their diverse needs and interests participate in decision making processes and freely express themselves. 

President Yoweri Museveni, also the chief guest at tomorrow’s event will also launch Uganda Green Incubation Programme, the Songhai Pilot Project located at Kampiringisa. 

The project model was approved by government in December 2016. It is an integrated agricultural production system that seeks to address problems of poverty, unemployment and food insecurity by strengthening the technical and organizational capacities of communities to produce efficiently and sustainably.

“I want to assure Ugandans and especially the youth fraternity in agriculture that the project will benefit them in addressing issues of quality and quantity of agricultural production” the minister said.

The celebrations of International Youth Day will take place in all parts of the country. The day presents a unique opportunity for all stakeholders to unite and ensure that young people are included in global, national and local affairs.
