Gulu High Court has released on Bail legislators that were arrested in Arua two weeks ago during the Parliamentary by-election.
33 people face treason charges stemming from an attack by rowdy youth of the presidential convoy. It is alleged that the angry youths pelted stones at the convoy of President Museveni who was from a campaign rally of the NRM candidate Nusura Tiperu at Boma grounds Arua.
They youths were allegedly under the leadership of Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi, and Arua MP elect Kassiano Wadri plus a host of other legislators. They have been in Gulu prison since arrest.
This afternoon, High Court presided over by Justice Stephen Mubiru granted bail to 12 of the 32 people. These include among others; Kassiano Wadri Arua Municipality, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine Kyadondo East, Gerald Karuhanga Ntungamo Municipality, Paul Mwiru Jinja East, and Mike Mabikke Makindye East.
Court set stringent conditions for the Bail, especially against the newly elected Arua Municipality MP Wadri, who will not be allowed to appear in his constituency for a period of three months.
The development came after an argument that his presence may complicate police investigations.
The accused were however grateful that court allowed them to keep their passports, making it easier for them to seek medical treatment in other countries.
They were released on a non-cash bond of UGX 5 million, while their sureties will each part with UGX 10 Million.
The accused are required to report to Gulu Magistrates Court on Thursday 30th August 2018. However, after this appearance, they will be expected to report as and when Court decides.
An ambulance was waiting outside Court and immediately drove off with Bobi Wine upon release. Former FDC president Dr. Kiiza Besigye called the events a shame to the country.
“This has been a shame to our country right from the time these people were kidnapped and tortured” he said.
