Uganda police force officers have shot dead one person and arrested two others following a speed chase in Kampala by police patrol on Monday night.

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson identifies the deceased suspect only as Muhammad. The other two in Police custody are Frank Kalule and John Mbuyateyezibwe.

According to Onyango, Muhammad was killed in a police chase which lasting for more than two hours that started from Lwezza in Kajjansi, Wakiso district. According to information obtained by URN, the suspects who were driving a premio vehicle registration number UAW 694L snatched a handbag from 60-year-old Namusoke Najemba around Kitende in Kajansi.

They were spotted by a police officer who was nearby. He immediately alerted police patrol. A team of police officers on patrol spotted the vehicle at Lweza and a chase begun. The suspects fled through Entebbe road to Kibuye and turned to Salama Road and then to Gaba Road with the officers in pursuit.

They later turned to Bunga to Muyenga back to Kansanga then Kabalagala. At around 8:40pm, one of the other police patrol vehicles intercepted the suspects and the officers opened fire hitting Muhammad.

He says the deceased's body was taken to the City Mortuary while the two other suspects are locked up at Kabalagala Police station. They will be transferred to Kajansi Police Station where a case of simple theft is being investigated.

The investigation may not yield much since police didn't recover exhibits of the said theft. A statement recorded by one of the police patrollers indicates that the suspects dropped more than 10 bags from the vehicle as they were being pursued.

"They had very many bags and as we chased, they were throwing out bags one by one. I counted 10 but we couldn't stop to pick them because they would escape," the statement made.
