At least ten people perished in a road accident along the Jinja - Kamuli highway at Walumbe junction, Buwenge town council.
Eyewitnesses say that a truck carrying sugar cane failed to climb a hill at Walumbe junction and rolled back before it overturned, spilling canes onto the tarmac in the process this caused an obstruction on the busy highway.
Police and residents were trying to clear the truck Registration number UAK 344V off the road, when another lorry registration number UAK 996Z, also loaded with sugar cane rammed into them.
According to Moses Batwala a former district councilor who rescued some of the victims, he counted 10 bodies that were taken to Buwenge health centre IV mortuary, while those that were critically injured were taken to Jinja referral hospital.
The Kiira North Division Police Commander Henry Mugarura confirmed the accident, adding that they are yet to establish the exact number of fatalities.
