Authorities in Nakaseke and Luweero districts have intercepted two truck drivers respectively after they tested positive for COVID 19.
According to reports, one of the drivers is a Ugandan aged 46 years who was intercepted at Katuugo village in Wakyato Sub County, Nakaseke district while in the garden with other people loading tomatoes which he was due to transport to South Sudan.
The Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson Isah Semwogerere, says that the police received alerts from the National Surveillance team at the Ministry of Health to track the driver after his results turned out positive at Elegu border.
The driver was tracked and evacuated together with the contacts to the Nakaseke district headquarters from where an ambulance picked them.
The Nakaseke Resident District Commissioner Fred Nayebare Kyamuzigita says that before being intercepted, the truck driver had stopped at Semuto town council for lunch and reportedly picked 22 people to help him load the tomatoes on the truck.
The driver was transferred to Naguru General Hospital for treatment, while all the contacts have been quarantined at an isolation facility located at Nakaseke Hospital.
Six other people including the driver's girlfriend whom he interacted with at Semuto town have been quarantined in their homes from where they will be tested.
By this evening, Police beefed up deployment at Nakaseke Hospital Quarantine Centre after some of the contacts attempted to escape.
In Luweero, the second truck driver, aged 56 years was intercepted at a roadblock at Don Petrol in Luweero town council while returning from South Sudan where he had delivered an assortment of plastics.
Henry Kasule, the Luweero District Health Surveillance Focal Person, explains that the truck driver tested positive at Elegu border on Sunday, but his results were obtained on Tuesday.
Kasule adds that the National surveillance team immediately alerted Police along the highway and he was intercepted at a roadblock. He says that the driver was transferred to Mulago Hospital.
The truck driver allegedly made a stopover at Pabbo in Amuru district and made contact with five people whom authorities are planning to quarantine.
Currently, Uganda has 264 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 65 of these have been discharged after they recovered from the virus while 80 are admitted at different health facilities.
