COVID-19 cases in Uganda have reached 1,000 following confirmation of 23 new positive for the disease on Wednesday.
12 of the confirmed cases are among returnees while three are among truck drivers. Eight other cases were picked from communities among contacts. 3,316 samples that were tested on Wednesday.
According to the Ministry of health, all the 12 returnees are Ugandan nationals who entered the country in the past two weeks. 8 are from Afghanistan, three from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and one from South Sudan.
Meanwhile, Dr. Monica Musenero, an epidemiologist and also a senior presidential advisor on epidemics says the increase in cases should be awake up call for Ugandans to take the disease seriously.
Musenero applauded health workers for all the work they have done that has controlled the spread of the disease saying that if it were not for the work of health workers, many more Ugandans would be sick.
Meanwhile, the African continent on Wednesday surpassed the 500,000 mark with over 11,900 death recorded.
Uganda also returned 31 foreign truck drivers who tested positive, to their countries of origin. These include; 24 Kenyans, 3 Tanzanians, 2 Congolese, 1 Rwandan and one South Sudanese.
The truck drivers tested positive at various border points. So far, Uganda has carried out 219,627 COVID-19 tests.
