Government has been tasked to declare 1st March of every year a public holiday. The call was made on Monday by residents of Bududa who want the day set aside to remember over 200 people who perished in Nametsi landslide and hundreds were displaced making it the first disaster of tat magnitude in Bugisu sub region on 1st March 2010.

On Monday, the resident marked the 11th anniversary since their relatives and neighbors died. The day was marked by over 500 people who trekked to Nametsi landslide area for prayers and in commemoration of those who perished in the landslide.

However, many of the people who turned up asked government to consider putting up a monument like a church at Nametsi where the children of those who perished in the disaster can go remember them each year.

They also noted that most of the victims who were buried at this particular spot have no graves for their children to look at in remembrance of them.

Bukalasi sub county local council three chairperson Peter Kusolo supported the plea by his residents saying it would be the best way to remember those who perished.

Bududa resident district commissioner George William Wopuwa promised to push for the plea.
