Ugandans who wish to visit their relatives, friends and clients in prisons must possess negative results from a test done in 72 hours, Frank Baine the Prisons spokesperson has clarified.
During the joint security media briefing at Police Headquarters in Naguru on Monday morning, Baine noted that a section of media houses mis-reported that the Commissioner of prisons Johnson Byabashaija had said that only those vaccinated are allowed to visit prisons.
“Last week, the commissioner for prisons noted that since the COVID-19 outbreak, the Uganda Prisons Services announced a number of Terms and Conditions which must be followed before being allowed access to an inmate. These include; that one must have negative results from a COVID-19 test acquired in the last 72 hours or since now there is vaccination, they may present a vaccination certificate” Baine says.
He noted that some journalists however misled the public to think that Byabashaija had said that only those that have been vaccinated should be allowed to visit inmates.
Baine says that with the vaccination exercise, it should become easier for more people to visit inmates at any of the prisons across the country.
Last week, the Uganda Prisons Services launched the vaccination exercise after receiving 10,000 1st doses of AstraZeneca from the Ministry of Health.
The UPS has 12,000 warders and wardresses and so far, 40% have been vaccinated so far. This means 2,000 will not receive the dose during this exercise.
