The whereabouts of the 365 people out of the 423 presented as missing by the National Unity Platform (NUP) are unknown to Government, Minister of Internal Affairs Gen. Jeje Odongo has said.

While presenting to Parliament a statement on missing persons, Odongo said that out of the list of 423 people presented by NUP, they only know 58 of these who have been verified, on Thursday.

He told the house that probably some of those people are hiding from the law and fear that showing face could lead to their arrest. According to Gen. Odongo, after his statement on missing persons last month, a number of MPs presented to him additional lists of persons whose whereabouts remain unknown.

He however revealed that after close scrutiny, the government can only account for 58 people who are either on remand or have since been released.

The 365 could not be verified because the people who provided the names did not indicate the time and location of the arrest, adding that information from intelligence indicates that these people could be hiding for fear of getting arrested.

From November riots, Odongo said 1,035 suspects were arrested, 901 charged in court, 734 were remanded, 167 released on bail, 113 were released on police bond, 21 were cleared and released by police while 51 were convicted and sentenced.

Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga the speaker of parliament appealed to the government to restrain from violating people’s rights when enforcing the law saying it is sad to be mentioned as a country that is leading in violence and brutality.
