There is nothing but dead silence at the National Unity Platform (NUP) offices in Kamwokya as a rival faction opens parallel offices in Rubaga, Kampala.
The faction was led by a former founder of the party, Moses Kibalama, before it was given away to Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
Kibalama, the founder of National Unity Reconciliation and Development Party-NURP says he is now president of the party after a delegates conference held recently removed the current boss, Bobi Wine.
He says the party’s constitution mandates that every two years, they hold a delegates conference to change leadership.
KIbalama adds that during the same conference held in Rubaga-Kampala on Thursday., the current Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya was replaced with Simbwa Kagombe, including the treasurer.
In his abensia, Bobi Wine was also elected Secretary for Foreign Affairs in the new leadership..
The faction’s party’s Secretary- General, Simbwa says they resolved to change the leadership of the party and shift the new headquarters of the party.
He says the party has only transformed its name and has maintained the constitution.
“NUP metamorphosed from NURP and it is not true that . Kyagulanyi changed the name of the party. He only became a flag bearer within the time,” he says NUP secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya declined to comment on the matter
“I won’t talk about them. I know what they are up to, so I won’t talk about them,” he said.
Kibalama in 2020 signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the People Power Movement leadership led by Kyagulanyi in which he handed over the party to them and consequently the latter was appointed the NUP leader.
In July 2021, Kibalama wrote to the Electoral Commission chairman, over including his members in the NUP leadership, his pleas fell on deaf ears.
He also notified the Electoral Commission of his impending move to get new leadership for the party after ending ties with Bobi Wine.
