A Uganda Peoples’ defence, UPDF officer who went on rampage and shot dead 8 people in Kanungu last week, will appear in the Mbarara Court martial to answer to the 8 counts of murder.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga told the press in Kampala today that Cpl. Katwesigye Kyatuka Moses 23, a UPDF soldier RA 186264 attached to 307 Brigade Headquarters located at Mburamuzi Village Nyakinoni Parish in Kihihi Town Council shot dead eight people in Kihihi, Kanungu District on 21st April 2016, at around 09:00PM.
“The tragedy started right from the barracks where the errant soldier picked a quarrel with his wife No. RA 229074 Pte. Ouma Sarah aged 30yrs attached to the same brigade. After a bitter quarrel, he picked his gun and shot her dead,” said Enanga.
He added; “In the process of shooting, No. RA 164936 Cpl. Byansi Ekelezio aged 36yrs responded to the gunshots, he was also shot at with several bullets and killed on spot.”
The errant soldier is said to have moved out of the barracks with his gun but while on his way, he met one Musiimenta, a female resident of Karubinzi parish in Nyakinoni Sub County whom he shot at and killed her.
According to Enanga, the soldier also shot dead Byamukama Medard 38, Tugumisirize Olivia and her son Gumoshabe Victor, Kyasiimire Proscovia. Two other people, Byakira Safi and Barekye Emmanuel were also shot and rushed to Bwindi Referral hospital in critical condition but Byakira died the following day, while Barekye has been transferred to Mbarara Hospital for further management.
The errant soldier handed himself over to Kihihi Police station with his SMG rifle No. UG. UPDF 48002482 with an empty magazine.
Now, police in Kihihi has handed Kyatuka to the Mbarara UPDF battalion awaiting trial at the Mbarara Court-martial.
It is believed, that the suspect had taken some drugs (Marijuana) which upset his brain and made him kill all the 8 people.
