City roads leading to and around Kampala high court have this morning been sealed off by security as former FDC presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye appears today for his bail hearing.
Lumumba Avenue, Buganda road, Shimoni Road, the Square 1 and Square 2 roads have all been affected as all kinds of security personnel poured in the city.
Visible in the city are heavily armed military police, anti-riot police, regular police traffic cops who have barricaded the affected roads and restricted access to passersby.
Armored vehicles are also visible at the constitutional square where only workers of the High court, lawyers, school children and journalists are allowed through.
Also, people whose offices are at neighboring buildings including Rwenzori courts, Simbanyo House, Mabirizi complex, East African Development Building and Grand Imperial hotel, who have for long used the affected roads are being diverted to alternative access.
This has in turn caused massive traffic jam on Kampala road with motorists trying to find way to their places of work.
The Kampala Central Divisional Police Commander, Aron Baguma, has declined to comment on the deployment and referred all media questions to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson.
Police have also blocked Besigye’s supporters and other members of the public from accessing the court premises.
The court had initially fixed Dr Besigye's bail application for July 6th but could not sit as it is a public holiday.
Besigye’s bail application arose on June 7 when Dr Besigye, through the prison authorities, applied to be released citing advanced age of 60 years, uncertainty of when his treason trial will commence, having substantial sureties, non interference with investigations, among others, as some of the grounds to support his release on bail.
Dr Besigye is currently on remand at Luzira prison facing treason charges.
