High court judge, Justice Wilson Masalu Musene has this morning granted former FDC presidential candidate Dr. Kiiza Besigye temporary freedom.

Musene granted Besigye a non cash Bail of 100 Million during a massively attended session at High court Kampala this morning.

The judge based on the fact that Besigye is 60 years old, and therefore of advanced age, Besigye has a permanent home in Kasangati, he presented credible sureties and promised to return to court as required.

Besigye was ordered to appear before court once every two weeks starting July 26th 2016 on treason charges stemming from his attempt to swear in as a president of Uganda, a day to the official inauguration of the legit president Yoweri Museveni.

Besigye has also been advised to restrain from violence for as long as his trial is ongoing.

Justice Musene made it clear, prior to delivering his ruling, that court is neutral and has no side.

He said Uganda should be a free and safe society for all with emphasis on peaceful resolution of conflict. He said Besigye was sometime charged with treason, but he complied with the bail conditions. Justice Musene also said Besigye is still innocent until proven guilty.

Besigye has been on remand in Luzira since May 2016.

His supporters and FDC loyalists immediately started jubilating at court while others are already drinking in different parts of Kampala.

In Kasangati, Besigye’s home also commonly known as FDC state house, bar owners are said to have already slashed beer prices as people hit bars already to celebrate his release.

Opposition chief whip also celebrated Besigye’s release. She tweeted; “It is good that Dr.Col.(Rtd) Kiiza Besigye has been granted bail by the High Court in Kampala. We continue to stand with those still in jail.
