The electoral commission has revealed it has never changed names to “The Independent Electoral Commission” as commonly mistaken by some civil society organizations (CSOs) and the general public.
The EC is this morning holding a breakfast meeting with Civil Society organizations at Kampala Serena Hotel.
In his address, the EC chairman Eng. Dr. Badru Kiggundu said the commission has never changed its name. “Our official name is Electoral Commission and Not Independent Electoral Commission.”
Kiggundu also called upon the CSOs to help in pushing voter education. “CSOs should support education function by promoting awareness on voter rights, duties and responsibilities for informed electorate.” said Kiggundu.
He added; “CSOs should promote peaceful campaigns and support conflict prevention by ensuring debates don't lead to hostility or conflict.”
The commission will also start vetting and approving any messages from CSOs before airing them, so as to avoid partisan information.
Meanwhile, Kiggundu says the commission never approved Topowa messages. He says they should be revisited to avoid misinterpretation. “When you talk of a pothole & relate it with change; you create a problem with interpretation of the message.” Says Kiggundu.
