Musician Shakira Kamulegeya has announced her intention to run for the Kampala Woman MP position in the 2026 general elections.
Shakira, known for her revealing outfits, said she wants to try her hand at politics and represent the women and people of Kampala District.
The singer said she is considering running as an independent candidate while waiting for a political party to offer her a ticket.
She wants to bring services and development closer to the people and improve their lives.
"I am a responsible person and want to bring development closer to my people," she said in an interview with Sanyuka Television. "Any party ready to give me a ticket, I am ready to go for the Woman MP position of Kampala District. I want to change things not only for Kampala but Uganda as well."
Shakira added that she has the necessary academic qualifications to contest for the position.
"I have all the required qualifications and even more, so I am ready," she said.
She will continue her music career alongside her political aspirations.
"I am not giving up on my music career, but I am trying my hand at politics," she added.
