Sixty four offenders have appeared before court while 72 others are appearing today for breaking traffic rules and regulations on the Kampala- Masaka highway.
The development comes after the Uganda police traffic department last week, in partnership with Ministry of works and transport, National Roads Authority (UNRA) and other transport stakeholders launched an operation to stop bad driving on a road that has turned into some butchery.
Polly Namaye, the deputy police spokesperson told the press at Naguru police headquarters in Kampala this morning that the offenses for which the suspects have been arrested include but not limited; Drink driving, being in possession of expired or no driving permit, driving a vehicle in dangerous mechanical conditions, careless driving, dangerous loading, driving without badge (for bus drivers), no third party insurance, failing to stop, failing to comply, driving a numberless vehicle, no rental license, and interference.
“The operation, codenamed ‘operation Fika Salama’ is aimed at promoting safety on the road and reminding road users of their obligation towards observing the traffic and road safety guidelines. The operation is still ongoing and will soon be extended to cover other roads especially where black spots are prominent” said Namaye.
She added; “On this note, the Uganda Police Force would like to remind all drivers especially those who drive passenger vehicles to ensure that they acquire the Passenger Service Vehicle License (PSV). They are also encouraged to have in their possession a driving permit or the provisional one ahead of the pending traffic operations in Kampala metropolitan area.”
