At least 90 million Shilling of tax payers’ money has disappeared putting Soroti district officials under the spotlight.
The money was meant for the purchase of surveying equipment used for demarcating boundaries and plotting coordinates for specific locations.
According to a report, in the 2013/2014 financial year, Soroti district budgeted 90 million Shillings for the purchase of the surveying equipment and put out advertisement calling for expression of interest to supply the equipment.
However, to date the survey equipment hasn't been bought, leaving the district to depend on private surveyors.
According to Benjamin Ajotu, the Soroti District Natural Resources and Environment Officer, part of the money was used to buy vehicle registration number LG 0005-107, which is being used by the Chief Administrative Officer.
He says the district has budgeted another Shillings 106 million this financial year, for the purchase of the equipment.
George Michael Egunyu, the Soroti district LC V chairperson denies claims that the money was diverted. The Chief Administrative Officer, Joseph Balisanyuka has pledged to investigate the matter, since the said money was released before he took off the district.
Nasuru Amaadi, the LC V councilor Central Division wants the Finance and Administration committee to investigate the circumstances under, which the money was diverted and mismanaged.
