Two men are in Police custody after they were caught pretending to be officers of the Uganda Peoples Defense Force-UPDF.

Lira police identifies the duo as Brian Omara, from Abim district and Thomas Angena, from Katakwi district.

The suspects were arrested from Iredha Chambers in Lira town on Tuesday following a tip-off from the community that they were masquerading as personnel managing Operation Wealth Creation in the Lango Sub-region.

Omara, in the company of Angena on June 23, jointly allegedly went to Lira Central Police Station to obtain a police letter to allow them to apply for National Identification Cards under the claim that their initial IDs were lost.

The duo had presented itself as UPDF officers at the rank of a Lieutenant from the Pader based 5th Division Army headquarters.

According to Robert Abak, Lira Resident District Commissioner, the duo was subsequently given police letters introducing them to National Identification Registration Authority Office in Lira. But, according to Abak, a quick background check found that the supposed officers were imposters.

David Ongom Mudong, the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson confirmed the arrest saying the suspects shall be handed to the Army for further management.
