Detectives at Pabbo police station in Amuru District have arrested five students of Bethel Senior Secondary School for allegedly burning down two huts belonging to the school staff.

The arson incident left two grass thatched huts belonging to the School’s Headteacher Mr Lamwony Francis and an unidentified teacher destroyed on 5/06/2022 at around 0500hrs and 7/06/2022 at around 0500hrs respectively.

Ongom David Mudong the Aswa Region PRO identified the students as Okello Martin, Ocira Patrick, Mwaka Emmanuel, Oringa Charles and Amone Francis.

Mr Lamwony told police officers that on 5th June 2022, he found one of his grass-thatched houses burnt by unknown persons. Two days later on 07/06/2022 at around 0600hrs, another one used as accommodation for a teacher was also found burnt.

Fortunately, no one was hurt as the huts had been vacated after teachers received threats of a planned demonstration by students in the school on allegations that they are being fed poorly.

“We have recorded statements from the Headteacher and police officers have been deployed at the school premises to monitor the situation. Preliminary findings by the detectives indicate that the school fence was cut to gain entrance to the grass thatched houses,” Ongom says.

The management of the school has since decided to temporarily close it today 8/06/2022, to allow for investigations.
