Traffic was on Tuesday morning brought to a halt in Tororo District after a Kenyan fuel tanker fleeing police officers lost control and hit an electric pole, killing one person on the spot.
The incident happened in Tororo municipality when the fuel tanker Reg. number KAV 967Z/ ZB 7063 was being pursued by a saloon vehicle driven by traffic police officers.
According to the Bukedi South Regional Police Spokesperson, Moses Mugwe, the driver of the truck was overspeeding when he lost control and rammed into an electricity pole next to the wall housing the World Program offices.
He says the fuel tank car immediately burst into flames leaving the turn boy who got stuck in the wreckage dead while the driver survived with minor injuries.
The accident scene paralyzed traffic on the road as police fire and rescue teams fought to put out the huge flames. Locals were also sent away as they tried to savage fuel from the truck with jerrycans.
