Police in East Uganda is yet to identify the body of Hon. Cyrus Amodoi the Toroma County Member of Parliament is said to have perished in last night’s fatal accident.
Nine people died on spot while 13 were injured and rushed to different hospitals after accident involving two taxis and a fuso truck at Kitigoma, along the Kampala-Jinja Highway.
According to Sebei region Police Spokesperson Lameck Kigozi, the accident occurred at around 9:45 pm on Tuesday.
He told HowweBiz that a fuso truck registration number UAN 447X from Jinja lost control and dragged the taxis for 50-meters off the road.
The taxis included registration number UAW 200W with inscriptions; Mbale-Kampala Multiple Taxi Limited and UAL 278F which was headed to Busia. The trailer was reportedly overtaking the two taxis at once when the tragedy occurred.
Kigozi tells us that cause of the accident was reckless driving by the Fuso driver who was severely injured and rushed to Jinja hospital. Kigozi says they are praying that he wakes up and explains why he caused this fatal accident.
“The cause of this accident according to our preliminary findings was reckless driving by the driver of this fuso truck because he left his lane that is on the left and swerved to the right where he rammed into these taxis. We don’t know why he did that, but this man was retrieved alive from the wreckage but he was also in critical condition. He was rushed to Jinja hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment” Kigozi explained.
Asked about the honorable MP’s involvement in the accident, Kigozi told us that he was yet to confirm the report.
The police mouthpiece also told us they were heading to Jinja hospital by this morning to identify the body of hon. Amodoi.
“We are trying to confirm that, because our DPC Njeru is already in touch with some people who know that honorable, and they are reaching out to Jinja hospital where his body is suspected to be. So we are yet to confirm” Kigozi told us.
However, most people are still confused as to why a member of parliament was using a taxi, yet he is entitled to a vehicle by his stature.
