The Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited-UETCL has explained that Wednesday night’s nationwide power outage was caused by a technical failure by Kiira, Nalubale and Bujagali hydropower dams.
The nation was left in awe after a blackout occurred between 7:10pm and 8:09 in almost all regions of the country.
In a statement released today by the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited-UETCL it is indicated that the power outage happened when ESKOM unsuccessfully tried to normalize power supply after maintenance works.
Part of the statement reads; "The failed attempt resulted into a power trip and all the generator units at Kiira and Nalubaale power dams tripped."
It indicates that three of the five generators at Bujagali hydropower tripped leaving only two generators on the national grid.
"During this period, Kenya experienced system instability and decoupled at Musaga and Lessos leaving the Western part of Kenya to our Uganda power system." Adding that, "This resulted into the remaining two generating units at Bujagali power dam to trip thus resulting into a total system blackout."
Moments after the statement was out, Ugandans took to twitter to mock the company for using complicated terms that Ugandans do not understand so as to confuse them.
